More about Bend, Oregon
Oregon's Diamond in the Desert
Bend is Oregon's seventh largest city. Bend is comprised of active outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and businesses that represent a wide variety of industries. From mining and forestry, to craft beer and even licorice, Bend is a thriving rural metropolis unique to itself.
The city of Bend was formed in the summer of 1905 when early settlers chose to drop the original name of Farewell Bend and incorporate as a true city. "Farewell Bend" was a name given by early westward settlers who, before crossing over the Cascade Mountain range, would stop on the banks of what is now known as Mirror Pond, in beautiful Drake Park.
The race for railroad dominance is what cemented Bend's position as a staple of Oregon commerce and tourism. Two competing railroad companies of the early 1900s brought workers to Bend in droves as the industries of forestry, mining, and cattle ranching employed hundreds, and eventually thousands of Bend residents. Since then, the mills have closed, but in their wake came a vibrant community of art and music, fine dining, eclectic shopping, and outdoor enthusiasm.
